Christmas at Epiphany

As we all know from personal experience, sometimes life can take us in unexpected directions and this past December was no exception.  When last I posted, the Christmas season was just beginning.  When last I posted, I expected to be shortly sharing lovely photos of all the wonderful holiday festivities I was planning to take part in.  When last I posted, I was also lamenting that this would be the first Christmas I had ever celebrated without my daughter.  However, as it turned out, it was a good thing that she wasn't here as Influenza A swept through the family right in the middle of the month.  My oldest son's family caught it first.  I came down with it ten days before Christmas.  It took four weeks, two visits to the urgent care and a third trip to my family clinic before I finally came back to the land of the living.  My husband caught it from me a few days later and my mother, in spite of our best efforts to isolate ourselves from her, came down with it a week later.  Within 24 hours of her first symptom she had double pneumonia and we had to call an aid car for her.  She was hospitalized twice and we were unable to help her at all because we were too ill ourselves.  She spent Christmas in the hospital and we spent it in bed.  Eventually we had her transferred to a rehab nursing facility where she has been for the past few weeks. It was a rather harrowing time but we made it through and finally were able to celebrate with our children and grandchildren on the 12th day of Christmas, Epiphany.

My mother was still in the hospital, but knowing that she was both safe and receiving excellent care made it easier for us to come together and share the holiday, especially for the sake of the grandchildren.  Fortunately, I had decorated the house earlier in the month so all bright and festive.

Molly Kitty was quite curious about the tree, but she went into hiding for the rest of the day once the grandchildren arrived!

We began our day with a lovely holiday breakfast of egg casserole, roasted potatoes, bacon, biscuits and gravy, and fresh fruit. Yum! I changed out all the candles on my Advent pillars to white as Advent was over and Christ has come.

The day was spent exchanging gifts, playing games, and sharing a holiday dinner together.  It was much quieter than in past years. but truthfully most of us were still in recovery so it was just what we needed.  Our grandson loved his new toy tractor!

Last week we were able to come together once again to celebrate Christmas with my mother at the nursing facility.  We also celebrated our granddaughter's birthday at the same time.

Now as this first month of the year is beginning to come to a close, I have been preparing for my mother to come home to stay with us for a little while as she continues to gain her strength and Lord willing is able to return to her own home.  God's mercies are great and he is with us whatever the future will bring. A belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! May the Lord bless and keep each of you in this new year ahead.

Adieu!

  1. Oh my goodness, how awful for you all. I know some people say they've got flu when they've got a cold, proper flu knocks you off your feet and can be very serious for older people or those who are weaker for other reasons. I remember back in 2000, there was a big outbreak in the UK, my mum and dad had to take to their beds, as did I, my brother was hospitalised, luckily Mick escaped it so he was able to look after us all. I'm glad you did manage to celebrate Christmas albeit late.

  2. Oh Gloria, I was so sad that you and your loved ones got hit so heavily with sickness right in the middle of the glorious Christmas season. At least you were able to eventually make up for it. Your grands are absolutely adorable and your home looked so beautifully decorated. I hope, too, your Mom can come to your home for awhile before she returns to her own home. So glad all are recuperating. Take care and oh! Thanks, Gloria, for visiting Writing Straight from the Heart and commenting, too. It is always such a pleasure for me to see you stopped by. Sincerely, Susan

  3. I'm so sorry you and your family have been so sick with the flu!! Thankfully you all came through it and were able to celebrate Christmas together. How fortunate that you had already decorated before you got sick so your house looked festive. I enjoyed the pictures of you and your husband as well as the ones of extended family.
Blessings for the coming year 💗💗💗

  4. Thank you. With my mother's illness on top of our own it was all a bit overwhelming and truthfully still is. However, in spite of everything, we were so grateful that we were able to find ways to come together and celebrate not just the season of Christmas, but also God's wonderful mercies and provision to and for our family.

  5. Hi Glo, it's lovely to see you all together at last, albeit somewhat later than usual, to celebrate Christmas. Your grandkids are sure growing (as they do!!) I'm so glad that you and the Investigator are back to normal and that my Aunt is recovering as well. Prayers for whatever adjustments will need to be made for a little while as she comes home to your house, and whatever arrangements will be planned for future care needs. I know it's a bit overwhelming and daunting. One day at a time, as they say . . . Sara

  8. Oh my goodness, you really had a month didn't you! Glad you're all on the mend now. Sounds like a very nasty Flu. Were you test to know it was Flu and not RSV? I wonder given how sick you all were. Glad you were able to finally celebrate and that you still had your pretty decorations up. Stay well, let's hope 2024 treats you and yours well.

  9. I hope so too. I tested negative for covid and positive for Influenza A. They gave me Tamiflu but I still wasn't able to shake it until I was given antibiotics for a secondary infection.

  10. Oh my, Gloria, that was a lot to go through on the health side of things. Glad you could rally and celebrate together on Epiphany. Hope your mom continues to recuperate and is able to go home soon.

  11. Thank you so much Ellen. As it turns out, I kind of liked the idea of celebrating on Epiphany. Of course, I wouldn't miss the celebration of Christmas Day, but I might consider adding some 12 days of Christmas festivities into to the mix.
