Sensible Shoes

Last night was my turn to host my monthly book club which is always a lot of fun.  A little wine, some fruit and cheese, and a few bites of chocolate, what goes better with a good book discussion?

This month's selection, Sensible Shoes,  turned out to be a really wonderful choice.  Part novel, part bible study and part personal spiritual revelation, there is so much in this book that I know I will be keeping it on my shelf to read over and over.

The story is about four different women from four different walks and places in their lives who come together at a Spiritual Retreat center in order to learn ways to grow personally and spiritually. Each one has experience brokenness in their lives. Over the course of several weeks they begin learning some of the ancient spiritual practices such as walking a prayer labyrinth in order to release and receive and using Lectio Divina to go deeper into God's word.  I found it all very interesting.  It's written in such a way that the reader can choose to take the spiritual journey along with them if they wanted to.  In fact, I discovered there is an 80 page companion guide that can be downloaded Here for those who might want to use it as a bible study.   While anyone can read this book and enjoy it, I think it has been written for Christian women who are ready to challenge themselves to go deeper into spiritual practices.  Whether you choose to just enjoy it as a novel or use it as a study I don't think you will be disappointed.

Happy Reading!

  1. good books are such blessings to us!!! :) ... glad for all the good in your life!!!... thanks for your comment on my blog... Theophany is the same date as Epiphany but a different commemoration; Theophany means 'revelation of God' and remembers/celebrates Christ's baptism; I believe Epiphany is for the Magi coming to Christ.

  2. It looks like an interesting book. I'm still waiting for The Little Paris Bookshop to arrive at the local library for pick up. I'll let you know how I like it. We can share notes at some point. You lay out a lovely refreshments table.

  4. The candle holder was a gift from a lifelong friend who has since passed away. Book clubs are a great way to make and deepen friendships.

  5. Hi! Wanted to be sure you saw what I wrote in response to your lovely comment on my blog - thanks again for the time you took!!! Here's what I wrote: hi Gloriade, Yes, I think so also! I never thought of being hospitable to oneself, but you have a point there and I do like to have a nice table setting for even my own breakfast with a book at hand! That is so neat about how you first had Rooibos tea!!! I still remember my sister-friend telling me, back when we lived in BC, how it came 'from a Red bush in Africa'... :) I am so glad you enjoy seeing my table settings and I am so grateful for the serving trays I have!!
